Gilmore Junio

Gilmore Junio, a Calgary-born speed skater, became a national symbol of selflessness during the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Known for his humble nature and strong values, he made headlines when he gave up his spot in the 1000m race to teammate and close friend Denny Morrison, who had missed qualifying. The act resonated deeply with Canadians and highlighted the spirit of sportsmanship that defines our national character.

Though Gilmore finished 10th in the 500m in Sochi, his decision to step aside led to Morrison winning silver—an inspiring moment that became part of Canada’s Olympic legacy. He later received a custom-made “Thanks Gilmore” medal through a crowd-sourced campaign, delivered a powerful TED Talk titled The Generosity Dilemma, and toured the country speaking about the balance between ambition and generosity. Now retired after competing in three Olympics, Gilmore leaves behind a legacy built as much on character as athletic achievement.
