Finlay Knox grew up on the beaches of New Zealand, spending his early years surfing and bodyboarding before his family moved to Canada, where he discovered a passion for competitive swimming at age seven. That love quickly turned into talent, and by 2021 he had broken the Canadian record in the 200m individual medley at the Olympic trials, earning a spot at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and finishing 17th in his debut.
Finlay’s momentum continued with a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the men’s 4×100m freestyle relay – Canada’s first in the event since 2006 – and another national record in the 200m medley at the Short Course World Championships. He claimed his first major international gold at the 2023 Pan Am Games in the 200m medley, followed by four relay bronzes. In 2024, he made history as the first Canadian man in 17 years to win gold at the World Aquatics Championships, becoming Canada’s first 200m medley World Champion since 1978.
