Nazem Kadri’s story is one of grit, adversity, and belonging. His father, a child of Lebanese immigrants, was determined to give him the opportunity to chase his Canadian hockey dream.
Nazem was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs seventh overall in the first round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. After sharpening his skills with the Marlies, which earned him a spot at the AHL All-Star Game in 2012, Nazem joined the Maple Leafs full-time in 2013. After 7 seasons with his hometown team, Nazem was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, where he went on to become the first Muslim player to win the Stanley Cup in 2022.
On a day filled with pride, joy, and inspiration, he brought the Cup to his hometown to celebrate with his community – a parade that started at the London Muslim Mosque and ended at Victoria Park, where he was awarded the key to the city of London.
Nazem is a Founding Board Member of the Hockey Diversity Alliance, whose goal is to address intolerance and racism in hockey. Now as the Alternate Captain of the Calgary Flames, he continues to show Canadians that hockey is for everyone.
